No Rules: an Abstract Art Symposium

Book Now

The American artist Helen Frankenthaler (1928–2011) said “There are no rules” governing how one should make a picture or painting… “that is how art is born, that is how breakthroughs happen. Go against the rules or ignore the rules, that is what invention is about.”

The NO RULES Symposium brings together five leading contemporary abstract painters alongside internationally renowned critics and curators to discuss innovation and creative freedom, their own practices and to reflect upon Frankenthaler’s work and legacy. Through an exploration of contemporary artworks and recent exhibitions this day long symposium will investigate how abstract painting relates to painting’s histories, to questions of subjectivity and representation, and to the contemporary world around us.

This is part of a series of events by Dulwich Picture Gallery in collaboration with Camberwell College of Arts.

Venue: Camberwell College of Art
