Contextual Lecture: Crucible – the Post-War World
With Jonathan Fenby
Following the devastation of the Second World War, a new global order emerged, which in large measure still frames the world today. Jonathan Fenby will lay out the global tapestry of events between 1947 and 1948; its striking cast of leaders and its enduring impact on our lives today.
This period of thirteen months saw the independence of India and Pakistan and war in Kashmir, the creation of the state of Israel and the first war with the Arab nations, the march towards victory of the Communists in China, independence struggles in Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaya and Africa, the division of Korea, the rolling out of the welfare state in Europe and the revival of Germany and Japan.
Jonathan Fenby CBE is China Chairman and Managing Director, European Politics at the research service TSLombard.
