Jews, Kings, and Democracy is part of the 2016 Contextual Lecture Series: Taking Liberties.

This lecture will explore the dynamics of Jewish political strategies beginning in Medieval England, analysing what has been called the “vertical alliance”—the assumption that the king was the greatest source of protection for Jews, despite discriminatory policies and occasional expulsions, and the fearful suspicion  of popular uprisings.

Marc Saperstein is a Professor of Jewish History and Homiletics at Baeck College. Before relocating to England, he held prestigious positions at three American Universities: the George Washington University in Washington D.C. (1997–2006), Gloria M. Goldstein Professor of Jewish History and Thought at Washington University in St. Louis (1986–1997), and Harvard (1977–1986).
