Difficult to stage and equally difficult to read, King John is often characterized by what it lacks: dramatic logic, originality - and any mention of the Magna Carta. This talk explores past and present interpretations and why it remains one of the least performed plays in the Shakespearean repertoire.
Dr Jenny Stevens has taught Shakespeare at both sixth-form and undergraduate level and currently combines educational consultancy work with part-time teaching. She is co-author of Essential Shakespeare: The Arden Guide to Text and Interpretation, 2013 and Shakespeare and Early Modern Drama: Text and Performance, 2016
