The fight for women's suffrage was a moral as well as political crusade. Do today's feminists stand inside that tradition – or would feminism's pioneers fail to recognise their own cause?

Melanie Phillips is a British journalist, broadcaster and author, whose weekly column currently appears in The Times. She has previously written for The Guardian, Observer, Sunday Times and Daily Mail. She is also a regular panellist on BBC Radio Four’s The Moral Maze. She is the author of Londonistan, The World Turned Upside Down: the Global Battle over God, Truth and Power, and The Ascent of Woman, a study of the ideas behind the female suffrage campaign.
