Oxford Professor meets American Caroline Hartley and her 18-year-old ward while on holiday in the Swiss Alps in 1861. They follow him back to campus and move into a nearby home to pursue him but unfortunately, university professors are forbidden to marry, and Francis must choose between love and his career.
