Batik Wall Art
Create your own striking fabric wall hangings using the batik technique and homemade inks in this online masterclass with artist Nikki Gardham.
Using the natural pigment in blackberries, Nikki will show you how to create your own ‘live’ ink that will evolve in colour and richness over time. You'll then use this to explore the batik dying technique with recycled fabric, creating beautiful botanical wall art inspired by our Unearthed: Photography’s Roots exhibition.
You'll come away with a series of fabric art pieces and the recipe for brewing this high-quality living ink.
You will need to source the following materials to take part:
For the ink: blackberries, water, gum Arabic, thyme oil (or clove oil)
For brewing: potato masher, medium saucepan, a jar with a lid, a bain-marie (a heatproof bowl over a medium saucepan), Kettle and water
For filtering: sieve, muslin cloth / coffee filter paper / an old pair of tights
