Japanese Marbling and Bookbinding Workshop with Violeta Bravo
Craft your own bound book and learn one of the oldest and most elegant methods of decorating paper. Suminagashi is the ancient Japanese technique of painting on water to create marbleised effects on paper. The term ‘suminagashi’ means ink-floating and describes the process of creating marble-like designs by manipulating floating (coloured) inks on water and carefully transferring them to an absorbent paper or fabric.
In this workshop you will experiment with Japanese marbling, and learn different bookbinding techniques, before creating a final book with your marbling designs to take home at the end of the class.
