Sara Shamma Masterclass
Learn to paint stunning self-portraits with oils.
Coinciding with our Autumn display Bold Spirits, artist Sara Shamma will teach a self-portrait masterclass sharing insights from her artistic process while exploring the layered oil painting technique synonymous with her pieces.
Shamma’s practice focuses on death and humanity expressed mainly through self-portraits and children painted in a life-like visceral way. Her works can be divided into series that reflect often prolonged periods of research, sometimes extending over years.
Shamma has previously taught at the Adham Ismail Fine Arts Institute in Damascus, and alongside her practice has always had a strong dedication to sharing her knowledge with the next generation of artists.
Sara Shamma: Bold Spirits is on display in Gallery 12 from 9 September 2023 - 25 February 2024. The paintings in this display are a new body of work which respond to the Gallery’s historic collection with a focus on paintings of women. Shamma's new works channel the spirits of these female figures while also connecting them to episodes from her own life, retelling their stories for contemporary viewers.
Suitable for all levels. All materials will be provided, just come along!
