John Dive
John Dive (born c.1674) married Dorothy Aston in 1704. The coat-of-arms is Dive of Millwich charged with Aston. DPG604 seems to date from the late 1730s and the sitter is probably therefore in his early sixties. Although this is a portrait of some quality its attribution remains problematic. Attributions have been suggested tentatively to Hans Hysing by B. Allen, and to Jonathan Richardson ('at his most sensitive') by E. Einberg (oral communications, 1997).
