Portrait of a Man

Traditionally identified with no.109 in the Cartwright inventory (mr Slys pictur ye Actour). However, Sly died in 1608, while the style and costume of DPG391 suggest a date of c.1635-40. Moreover, label and inscription on the verso identify DPG391 as almost certainly no.196 in the Cartwright inventory (which occurs on a missing page). Another old inscription on the verso seems to read 'by Dobson'.
