Thomas Stothard
Thomas Stothard (1755-1834): painter and notable book illustrator; elected RA 1794; librarian of the RA from 1812; friend of Flaxman, Beckford and Samuel Rogers. The artist, C. R. Leslie noted 'As he grew old...his appearance became very venerable; his head, or rather the expression of his face, resembling the antique in the British Museum called Homer'. DPG346 is presumably the portrait of Stothard exhibited at the RA in 1833; the sitter would then have been about 78.
