Gathering Grapes
Acquired as Claude but catalogued as Swanevelt until 1880, when given by Richter to the Italian school. Denning records that Turner admired the picture and recognised it as the work of Claude. According to the inscription on the Liber Veritatis drawing, the picture was painted for a client in Paris. Roethlisberger suggests a date of 1641/2. The picture is considerably damaged and was in unexhibitable condition until restored by Patrick Lindsay in 1984.
