Saint Jerome in Penitence

One of the fathers of the western Christian Church, Saint Jerome (342-420 AD) is best known for translating the Bible into Latin. This painting refers to the four years he spent in the Syrian desert, where he lived the life of a hermit, studying Hebrew and contemplating upon his sins. It was catalogued until 1880 as Guido Reni and thereafter as Italian School.
