Watch: Yoshida Ayomi's Transient Beauty
Yoshida Ayomi photographed inside her installation 'Transient Beauty' by Graham Turner.
Pushing the boundaries of woodblock printing, contemporary artist Yoshida Ayomi has harnessed the artistic tradition for which her family are famed, and put her own spin on the medium.
The daughter of Chizuko and Hodaka, Ayomi was born and raised in Tokyo and still lives there today.
Ayomi’s formal printmaking training began in 1979 where she first began researching how the translucence and layering of silkscreen prints could be translated into woodblock. Other experimental techniques include using the wood chips taken off woodblocks during the carving process to create site-specific installations.
Ayomi’s ‘Transient Beauty’ (2024) was commissioned specifically for our current show. Inspired by the cherry blossom trees in Dulwich Village, this large installation was created in homage to Ayomi’s family - including her grandfather Hiroshi, who visited the gallery over 100 years ago.
‘Transient Beauty’ is created as a reflection of impermanence and the passing of time. In turn, it will only be on display at Dulwich Picture Gallery and will cease to exist once the exhibition is over. Be sure to catch it before the show closes on 3 November.
