2016: a year of discoveries
Today Dulwich Picture Gallery's ambitious exhibitions programme is revealed. A year of discoveries, 2016 will see a slate of understudied artists brought to the fore: the radical Norwegian painter-printmaker Nikolai Astrup, visionary British genius Winifred Knights, and Master of the Dutch Golden Age Adriaen Van de Velde. The programme will aso see exciting new approaches to familiar artists in Making Discoveries, a series of focused curatorial displays revisiting Old Masters in light of the most recent trends in Art Historical thought.
Making Discoveries
12 January 2016 - 5 March 2017
This year Dulwich Picture Gallery will launch a series of displays that delve deeper into four artists in the Gallery’s collection: Van Dyck, Dou, Rubens and Rembrandt. Examining the works of each artist, the series will celebrate the creative processes of these Dutch and Flemish masters.
Nikolai Astrup: Painting Norway
5 February 2016 - 15 May 2016
Dulwich Picture Gallery presents the radically innovative works of Norwegian artist Nikolai Astrup (1880 - 1928) for the painter and printmaker's first ever major London exhibition - and indeed the world's, outside of Norway.
Winifred Knights
8 June 2016 - 18 September 2016
Inspired by the masterpieces of Italian Early Renaissance artists, and painstakingly exact in her working methods, Winifred Knights (1899-1947) is one of the most pioneering British artists of the first half of the 20th century.
Van de Velde: Master of the Dutch Golden Age
12 Oct 2016 - 15 January 2017
The first ever exhibition devoted to the Dutch painter and draughtsman Adriaen van de Velde (1636 - 1672), one of the finest landscape artists of the Dutch Golden Age. Through collaboration with the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, over 60 paintings and exquisite preparatory drawings by this prolific, but tragically short-lived artist will be brought to London.
