Discover the drama of Ribera: Art of Violence after-hours in this special Gallery Late, featuring live music and dance set amongst Ribera’s paintings, workshops, talks and more. We bring together a curator, an anthropologist, a drag queen, and queer visual artists and musicians as the worlds of 17th century Spain and 21st century London collide.

Line Up 

After Violence from _REMIX 

A new live art work exploring gender, masculinity and violence performed beneath Ribera’s awe-inspiring Apollo and Marsyas. Featuring Baroque drag from Rhys’s Pieces, non-binary soprano Ella Taylor and electronic composer Benjamin Tassie.

Animalis

A visceral and moving new dance work in the Mausoleum, exploring themes of Ribera: Art of Violence from pain and suffering to redemption, by dancer, director and choreographer Dane Hurst.

Tales of Flaying with Dr Gemma Angel

Dr Gemma Angel, an interdisciplinary scholar, invites the curious-minded to an illustrated talk that will reveal the cultural, religious and medical relevance of the flayed figure. Drop-in to ask questions as grisly as you dare and view fascinating images of the flayed figure in art and medicine.

Curator’s Tour with Dr Edward Payne

A short tour looking beneath the skin of some of Ribera’s most sensational work, with particular focus on the contrasting images of the sublime versus the grotesque.

Hybrid Desire: Exquisite Corpse Portrait Workshops

Create collaged and mixed media portraits with Hybrid Desire, a South London based artist working in ink, paint, mixed media and tattoos.

Ribera: Capturing the Figure
Workshop with Lucy Ribeiro

Help create a collaborative large scale artwork which explores movement, expression and tone in Ribera's work. Facilitated by artist and educator Lucy Ribeiro and her team, this accessible workshop is open to all.
